Paper Development Workshop

The PDW welcomes researchers from different domains who wish to share QCA experiences, exchange ideas, and develop an empirical QCA paper. The workshop uses small roundtables so that paper developers can receive detailed, constructive feedback from QCA experts.

Eligibility and scope

The proposal must describe an empirical study in which QCA is already being applied. A submission may not be accepted if the project is at a stage before applying QCA or if it is purely conceptual rather than an empirical application of QCA.

Required abstract content

Name the file YourSurname_PDWJ26 and explain the QCA-based research design, including:

  1. The research question or questions
  2. The analytical framework
  3. The strategy for collecting raw data and calibrating cases
  4. The reasons for using QCA to address the research gap

Within the 500-word limit, provide detailed information on the data—including the number of cases and conditions—and the empirical findings of the QCA study. Include the title and all authors’ information in the file.

Review and next steps

An expert panel reviews the clarity of purpose and methodological rigor. Accepted applicants are invited to submit a full paper for presentation at the PDW.

Paper submission

To receive valuable feedback during the PDW, please submit your paper in advance. Your paper should be no more than 8,000 words long. Send it as an email attachment to jqca2026@gmail.com by 16 October 2026.

A dinner reception will be held on the evening of the first day of the conference, 30 October. Please indicate whether you plan to attend when you submit your paper by 16 October.

Travel grants for PhD students

Travel grants of up to ¥50,000 per person are being considered to cover accommodation expenses for PhD students who have insufficient or no funding to travel to Tokyo. The number of grants is limited, and priority will be given to presenters travelling from far away.

Applicants were asked to reply by 11 September 2026. This application deadline has passed.

Expert Workshop

The EW invites experienced QCA researchers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to present, develop, and discuss methodological issues related to QCA. It is a hybrid event, combining in-person and online participation, and is organized as a discussion forum rather than a conventional paper-presentation session.

Eligibility and scope

The main focus of the proposal should be on developing QCA or a related method. Empirical applications may be used to illustrate the methodological issue. The supplied call does not state separate selection or scoring criteria beyond this scope.

Required abstract content

Submit a maximum 500-word abstract as a Word or PDF file. Name the file YourSurname_EWJ26 and include the title and all authors’ information. No additional required abstract sections are stated in the supplied call.

Participation and next steps

Applicants will be notified around 31 August 2026. Accepted presenters will be invited to submit a full paper, although a full paper is not required; no EW paper-length limit is stated. QCA experts may also participate without presenting a paper and should indicate this using the same online form.
